Connection and community
The difference our volunteers, colleagues and partners make is the driving force for what we do. Here you can find out more about the impact of Volunteering Matters in communities across the UK.
Our connection and community work brings people together through relationships and practical support. This includes befriending, neighbourhood schemes, transport services and targeted support for young people and those who may be at risk of isolation or exclusion.
These roles are often built on trust, consistency and local knowledge. Whether it’s a regular chat, helping someone get to an appointment or creating safe spaces for young people, volunteers play a vital role in supporting people to stay connected and independent.
This work matters because strong communities are built on everyday connections. By reducing loneliness, improving access to support and strengthening local networks, volunteers help create a sense of belonging and resilience that benefits everyone.

Why it matters
Improving health and wellbeing
Regular contact, trusted relationships and practical support help reduce loneliness and isolation. This can improve mental health, build confidence and support people to stay physically and emotionally well.
Breaking down barriers
Everyday challenges like transport, access to services or lack of support can stop people taking part in their community. Volunteers help remove these barriers, making it easier for people to access opportunities, support and connection.
Building stronger community connection
When people feel supported and included, they are more likely to take part, build relationships and support others in return. This creates a stronger sense of belonging and more resilient, connected communities.
