At Volunteering Matters, we believe in the transformative power of connection. Our befriending services are a lifeline for those who find themselves lonely or socially isolated. By fostering friendships, we help individuals reconnect with their communities, enhance their mental health, and feel supported in navigating life’s challenges.
Befriending provides regular companionship to those who need it most. Whether it’s through a friendly chat over the phone or in-person visits at home, these connections are more than just social interactions—they’re lifelines.
For many, they’re the bridge to re-engaging with their community and finding joy in everyday moments.
Why befriending matters
Loneliness and social isolation aren’t just emotional challenges; they have serious implications for physical and mental health. Our befriending projects:
Improving mental health: Regular social interactions reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Build community connections: Beneficiaries feel reconnected and supported by their local communities.
Empower volunteers: Befrienders gain as much as they give, developing empathy and forming lasting friendships.
Our projects
We’re proud to deliver impactful befriending projects across the UK, tailored to meet the specific needs of each community:
Volunteering Friends
Blaenau Gwent, Wales
In Blaenau Gwent, we focus on supporting older adults (50+) living alone. Winter can be particularly tough with shorter days and colder weather making it harder to get out. Befrienders share cups of tea, take walks, or help beneficiaries attend social activities. Just an hour a week can dramatically improve someone’s well-being.
North Lanarkshire Befriending
North Lanarkshire, Scotland
Our focus expands to include young carers aged 8–18. Befrienders offer emotional support and enable young people to enjoy “time out” from their responsibilities. Whether through engaging in fun activities or simply lending a listening ear, these relationships empower young carers to make their own choices and build resilience.
Flintshire Befrienders
Flintshire, Wales
A National Lottery Community Funded project. Through the engagement of volunteers, we support older people (50+) living in the CH8 area of Holywell who are experiencing feelings of social isolation and loneliness.
Welcome Friends
Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Welcome Friends has been running for over 11 years. The project provides friendship through home visits and telephone calls by volunteers, reducing social isolation and improving well-being.
