Mentors, mentees and staff from Grandmentors Perth and Kinross recently volunteered at Southton Smallholding near Perth, helping to prepare 10 vegetable beds for this year’s crops.

Mentors, mentees and staff from Grandmentors Perth and Kinross recently came together for a volunteering day at Southton Smallholding, an inspiring organic farm just outside Perth.

Grandmentors is an intergenerational mentoring project that connects young people with older volunteer mentors who provide encouragement, guidance and support. Through trusted relationships, the project helps young people build confidence, develop life skills, reduce isolation and create positive futures.

Many activities within Grandmentors focus on building community connections, encouraging wellbeing and helping young people feel part of something bigger.

Southton Smallholding supports young people and adults with mild to moderate disabilities through a range of practical, hands-on projects. The smallholding provides opportunities to develop skills, build confidence and connect with others through activities including growing vegetables for veg-box subscriptions, caring for animals, maintaining the site and learning practical skills such as joinery.

During the day, the Grandmentors group worked together to weed and prepare 10 vegetable beds ready for this year’s crops. Alongside the hard work, the day was filled with conversation, laughter, fresh air and plenty of tea.

The volunteering day was an opportunity not only to support the smallholding, but also to strengthen relationships between mentors and mentees in a relaxed outdoor environment. Activities like this help create the sense of connection and belonging that sits at the heart of Grandmentors.

The group is already looking forward to returning later in the year to see how the vegetables have grown.
