Funded by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, this Driver Services provides support to those in needs by giving access to volunteer drivers.
Our service supports older people or people in need of assistance to attend hospital and healthcare appointments and social activities such as lunch clubs.
Becoming a volunteer driver provides a door-to-door service for those who need it, and aims to help people to access their local community, attend key appointments and maintain independence.
A service that is dementia friendly
We’re proud to share that our Stockton-on-Tees Volunteer Driver Service has been recognised with a Dementia Friendly Award. This initiative by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council celebrates organisations that champion support for people living with dementia. At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to making sure our projects are inclusive and accessible for both our volunteers and the people we support.
One volunteer, Alastair shared his experience:
“I had little knowledge of disability in general before joining the Driver Service. The provision of Dementia Awareness training was invaluable in light of the fact that many customers have varying levels of dementia, and before the course I was completely unaware of how to deal with it. This has given me a renewed sense of purpose since I retired, and that just by giving some spare time, and my ability to drive, can make so much difference to so many people”
