Every year 10,000 young people over the age of 16 leave care in the UK. More than 60% were taken into care due to abuse or neglect, and many have grown up without the significant personal and developmental benefits of a grandparent figure in their lives. Inspired by the role that grandparents play, we recruit and support Grandmentors aged over 50 to use their wisdom, energy and life experience to help young people leaving care stay on track and achieve their potential.

Volunteering Matters transforms people’s lives through the power of volunteering. We build projects and programmes that respond to some of the most difficult challenges facing individuals and their communities today. This holiday season, we’re asking you to help us to invest in volunteering programmes like Grandmentors.

“It has massively changed my life. Having someone that actually gives an interest and wants to help you. It has made a huge, huge difference”  – Cole, young person leaving care

By the end of 2019, Volunteering Matters wants to have helped over 500 care leavers across the country.  We need your support to achieve this.

Your donation of:

  • £10 will provide a care leaver and their mentor with refreshments when they meet
  • £50 will allow us buy food to use at a soft matching cookery sessions which is when a young person meets their Grandmentor for the first time.
  • £120 will ensure a young person can travel safely to meet their Grandmentor throughout the year
  • £1,000 will enable us to recruit and train a volunteer Grandmentor who will support a young person leaving care for at least one year.

This holiday season, as we reflect on how to make 2019 a better year for everyone in the UK, consider donating to Volunteering Matters and help us to support more volunteers and change even more people’s lives.

Fundraise for us

Why not challenge yourself running a 10k, climbing a mountain, or cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, while getting your family and friends to sponsor you on behalf of Volunteering Matters?

Give a gift now

Your donation, regardless of the size, will help our dedicated volunteers reach more vulnerable and disadvantaged people across the UK.

Leave a gift in your will

Your will is one of the most important documents which you will ever write. Once you have ensured that your family and loved ones are provided for, we hope you will consider leaving a gift to Volunteering Matters.

Give in memory

Donating in memory of a loved one is a personal and special way to celebrate and remember them. Some people choose to collect donations for their chosen charity instead of flowers, to create a lasting impact to a cause that is important to them or their loved one.
