Key Facts

  • Supported volunteering for adults over 25 with learning disabilities
  • Support from trained community mentors enabling access to community activities and volunteering opportunities

Into Hackney is a project working to alleviate loneliness and social isolation among adults (25+) with learning disabilities in the borough of Hackney. Volunteering Matters recruit and train volunteer community mentors who support adults in volunteering and activities on a one-to-one basis.

Loneliness and social isolation have a negative impact on physical and mental health, and Into Hackney community mentors will provide vital and needed support to those who have learning disabilities to access opportunities they may struggle to access without the help of a mentor.

Once a suitable volunteering opportunity has been identified, volunteers will be offered:

  • Induction training to prepare volunteers for their new role.
  • One-to-one support from the project officer or a Community Mentor can help support within placements as well as travel training and life skills.
  • A volunteer development plan will be established and reviewed regularly so that all volunteers gain the most out of their journey.
  • Out-of-pocket expenses covered whilst volunteering.
