Key Facts

  • Running in the Pembrokeshire, Wales
  • Volunteer driving scheme for unpaid carers who may find it difficult to get around

Cars4Carers is a Pembrokeshire based social car scheme that provides transport for unpaid carers via volunteer drivers.

Over 10% of the UK population are unpaid carers; caring for relatives or friends on a voluntary basis. These carers receive no funding from the Government and often have to make sacrifices in order to continue providing care. This may be financially, or it may be that the carer is elderly or unwell. Our project aims to alleviate the stresses unpaid family carers suffer by providing free and friendly transport options.

Through the project, carers can redeem one journey per week permitting volunteers are available. These journeys can be for any reason such as; shopping, socialising, or just a trip to town! For hospital appointments we provide support to help the unpaid carer explore possibilities however, if there is no substitute then we will help. This allows family carers to continue their own life, ensure they continue to look after themselves and alleviate at least some of the stress of daily life.

Although volunteers drive under their own motor insurance (advice on this can be provided by Volunteering Matters project staff), top-up insurance is provided. Volunteers are also reimbursed for their mileage as well as any parking fees.

If you would like to become a volunteer driver, or you want to refer yourself or someone you know then please contact us today.

Many people rely on our volunteer drivers to help them do everyday things that most of us take for granted. A simple trip to the shops can be complicated, if not impossible, for some people without the support of a volunteer driver.
