Befriending Matters was a project that ran from 2016 – 2018 across North East London. Through the efforts of befriending volunteers, the project helped to tackle loneliness, isolation and poor health and wellbeing, by matching vulnerable older people with volunteer befrienders.

This befriending took place through telephone calls, group befriending (where a group of volunteers visited a beneficiary) or one-to-one befriending visits. As friendships developed, beneficiaries and volunteers often reported that they felt more confident, with people at risk of social isolation re-engaging with the community.
