“The gift of helping young children learn to read is one Marion Hardy has been passing onto pupils at a primary school in Exeter for more than 20 years.

Although the 76-year-old is a former teacher, no formal qualifications are needed for what she does because she voluntarily supports children with reading, and more people like Marion are needed in the city. Marion, a volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP), is a familiar face at St Sidwell’s Church of England Primary School where she listens to Year 1 children read who next extra help every Monday afternoon.

The former secondary school geography teacher, who also used to run a brownie group in Cornwall, said: “I became a volunteer because I wanted to give something back because I had a completely free education. I went to grammar school and university – all for free…”
