On Friday 28th June our Activ8 project won the Youth Work Project category at the Youth Excellence Awards 2019. Organised by the Welsh Government, the awards recognise and celebrate outstanding youth work projects, youth workers and those involved in youth work across Wales.

Activ8 is a peer-led project running across Gwent. The volunteers who take part are young people aged 18-24 who have overcome personal barriers. We support these volunteers to become Activ8 Champions. We then match our Champions with young people in Gwent. The Champions work with these young people to help overcome their own challenges and difficulties.

The judges felt Activ8 is a great example of what can be achieved when young people are enabled to help themselves and their peers. They were impressed with the number of Activ8 participants – 75% – who have progressed on to further education, training or employment.

Sianne Morgan, Youth Development Manager for Volunteering Matters said

‘this is a remarkable achievement for Activ8 and the fantastic achievements of young people through peer support and intervention. I’m so proud of all our young people on this project and the way Activ8 is shaping the future of youth engagement into education, employment and training’.
