Roy, 71, volunteers with RSVP Reading in Schools programme in Ilkley, West Yorkshire:
“I had been retired for a while when I spotted an ad in the local paper for reading volunteers. I wanted to help in schools and to keep my brain active so it seemed like a great fit. When I originally started at the school, I worked mostly with young children who the teachers thought could benefit from my help, some of whom were lacking a male role model at home.
“I worked with children of all reading abilities and often found that they liked to talk to me about other elements of their schooling and life. I really enjoy going into school every week, seeing people and inspiring confidence in the children I work with – it is so fulfilling for me to see them progress and learn. I really like the fact that I can hopefully pass on my own knowledge and experience to help the next generation.”
